A supervolcano would devistate us. A supervolcano is an eruption which ejects at least 240 cubic miles of material into the atmosphere, or 1,000 cubic kilometers of materials. The 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption ejected 6 cubic kilometers. One of United States' most famous places, Yellowstone, could destroy us. It's happened before.

Yellowstone, a Supervolcano

Yellowstone is a peaceful place now, but 640,000 years ago, it wasn't. Yellowstone is on a hotspot, just like Hawaii. A hotspot is an area where magma comes very close to the surface, normally causing a volcano. But in Yellowstone, the rock is too hard and the magma can't find any weak spots to come out. Instead, water seeps down there, and is heated, and rises to the surface. It makes Yellowstone famous - Old Faithful, a famous geyser.

Yellowstone has had three supereruptions. One 2.1 million years ago, another 1.3 million years ago, and the most recent one 640,000 years ago. Other than that, 70,000 years ago, Yellowstone had a lava flow, or non-violent eruption.

Yellowstone isn't the only supervolcano. There's about thirty more. They're listed below.

There's not really anything to do here, unless you want to move to Mars. Yellowstone might erupt, causing a huge famine. There's nothing you can do about it. But you'll know what's around you. The only hardship of that is, well, loosing sleep over your neighbors' trash can falling over. You can contact, ask, and suggest things in our contact us page.
